Walmart to Pay $5.6 Million in Overcharging Settlement

Walmart has agreed to pay $5.6 million to settle a consumer protection lawsuit brought by four California counties—Santa Clara, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Sonoma—over allegations that the retailer overcharged customers by misrepresenting product weights and prices for items such as produce, baked goods, and prepared foods. Of the total settlement, $5.5 million will be allocated to civil penalties and approximately $139,908.92 will cover investigation costs by Weights and Measures departments across the state. Santa Clara County will receive $1.375 million for its Consumer Protection fund. The settlement requires Walmart to deploy staff in its California stores to ensure future weight and price accuracy. While Walmart has not admitted wrongdoing, the company agreed to these measures to avoid further legal exposure. This is not the first time the retailer has faced such allegations—Walmart paid $2.1 million in 2012 for similar pricing violations.
